For this project I was assigned with the task of redesigning a product that I felt could use improvement. The objective for this project was to create a new package design that appealed to a specified target audience for a product in need.
By browsing through the aisles at a local grocery store, I was able to locate a project that I felt could use a redesign. I chose the product “Cherry Man Jumbo Maraschino Cherries”. Below you can view the original packaging design.
After choosing the audience I researched and analyzed to determine a target audience. The intended target audience for this product redesign is older women, primarily ages 65 and above. Through Media Mark statistics I was able to determine that the majority of people who grocery shop on a regular basis and that the demographic that most enjoys canned or jarred fruit is older women. These statistics rationalized my chosen target audience.

The analysis of target audiences for this product is what originally lead me to believe it needed to be redesigned. The original packaging appealed mainly to children and had an immature and youthful appearance. The big idea that I came up with for the redesign of this packaging was implementing a more mature and Homestyle looking design that appealed more to my identified target audience, older women.
The first step I took when beginning my product redesign was finding inspiration. One of my favorite places I go to find inspiration when taking on a new project is Pinterest. After finding some inspiration and getting my creative juices flowing I began brainstorming ideas for the design and color scheme. I landed on a topic appropriate, cherry and nature related, color scheme of red, off-white, and a light khaki color (colors and hex codes listed below).
In the process of redesigning the product, I realized that I would have to redesign the brand logo as well, as the logo was a main contributing factor to the original playful childish look. I decided to continue the brands choice of having a purely textual logo, but changed the font to a more elegant style. See the comparison below.
I made my first rough draft in Illustrator and then went about editing and refining the design with the critique and input of my peers and came up with the following design.
The final step was to actually construct and finalize the product with its newly designed packaging. So the first thing I did was go to the store and get all the needed supplies. The needed supplies included: fabric, twine, superglue (to glue the fabric to the lid), and goo gone product (to remove the original sticker).
Then I sent the design to a local printing business to have the design printed on mactac paper. Color almost always varies from the computer screen to the printed version, so I printed numerous different versions experimenting with the color so that the final printed design matched the coloring of the chosen fabric. Lastly, I assembled the packaging. I took of the previous label, removed all adhesive, washed the bottle, and applied the new sticker. I then super glued the fabric to the container lid and tied around it with the twine. This was the result.
However, after constructing the first packaging with this label and asking for even more critique I received the following feedback: the “with stems” and “NET WT” text is too small and thin, and there is a crease in the bottom left corner of the label application. I then went about making those subtle adaptations by turning the font into a regular weight, rather than thin, and although I didn’t have room to increase the font size immensely I was able to increase it by three points. I also took extra precaution when applying the label and did a couple test runs to assure there would be no creases in the final version. This is the result of my final redesigned product as a flat label and fully constructed in comparison to the original packaging.

By making the packaging more mature, and “homey” my target audience will be able to relate more with the branding, respect the brand, and appeal more to the design. In addition, the new packaging is appears more “high-end” and is more universal, so although it does appeal to my target audience, it does not alienate them and will therefor increase sales.
For this project the objective was to collect data about a topic of choice, order the information in a logical and visually appealing manner, and save and optimize the image for web usage. Some additional criteria that was required included creating at least three vector images, one stylized chart, and showing any sources used along with your personal logo at the bottom of the infographic.
I chose to use this assignment to create an infographic resume. As a communications major emphasizing in visual communications, my design abilities are one of my main focal points. I wanted to be able to demonstrate these design abilities quickly and efficiently to employers, and I decided the easiest way to do that would be to show my design abilities right there in my resume.
The first problem I ran into was the issue of resumes being mainly textual, and therefor not implementing enough design elements. I solved this by creating an icon to represent each textual section, and creation design elements around each textual element, for example the speech bubble around the blurb about my skills. Another issue I predicted was the chance that some employers won’t like the idea of an infographic resume, and some will. I solved this by deciding to still submit my traditional resume when applying to jobs, and adding a link to my LinkedIn profile on my traditional resume. I then uploaded my infographic resume to my LinkedIn profile for potential employers to view when they visit. Also, when the opportunity arises in applications to upload “other files”, that is where I will include my infographic resume. I believe by not substituting this resume for my traditional one, and rather using it as another reference, this will solve the issue of some employers enjoying infographic resumes, and some not.
I solely used the program Adobe Illustrator for this project. One reason for this is because it is the Adobe program that I am most comfortable and familiar with. Another reason was because I was creating all of my images and icons from scratch and wanted them all to be vectorized.
The first step of my process was to brainstorm ideas. After the brainstorming step, I was able to begin sketching (thumbnail image one below) potential layouts and designs. After creating a solid sketch of what I wanted my final infographic to look like, I began creating the visual elements in Adobe Illustrator and created a rough draft to show my peers and ask for feedback (thumbnail image two below). It wasn’t until after I had finalized all of my icons, text, and layout that I began playing around with a choosing the color scheme. I ended up settling on a triad color scheme with the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. I decided on this because it kept my infographic simple and professional, but still made it fun by adding the pops of vibrant simple colors. After receiving critique from them, I implemented the changes and came up with one last draft infographic shown in thumbnail three.
The very last step to my process was receiving more critique from my peers to then better refine my infographic. Some of the critique I received was that it didn’t quite have the normal feel of an infographic due to the lack of visuals incorporated into the textual sections. I solved this problem by incorporating images into the two textual sections that didn’t have any, the education section and the experience section. In the education section I added a visual based time line graphic, and in the education section I added visual icons of the job logos that correlated with each experience. My objective for this project was to create a brand mark/logo for myself. The requirements for the project specified that the mark had to be more than simply textual by incorporating some sort of illustration or design, and had to be a professional quality vector image. It also required that the brand mark relate to ourselves in some way. I personally wanted to use this assignment to create a brand mark that represented my design abilities, and to create a mark that I could include on resumes and in portfolio work for when applying for design jobs post graduation.
The first step to my brand mark creation process was to sketch out ideas. Through these sketches I was able to take the ideas in my head and try out different tactics and develop them further. I then took these sketches and asked for feedback from my peers. After receiving feedback, I sketched even more and came up with the sketch for how I wanted my final brand mark to look.
My next step was to take the sketch and begin creating the it in Illustrator, and the following picture shows the original sketch next to the illustrator version.
The first problem I had to overcome when beginning this project was what text to include on the brand mark. First I considered using my name, however I am not very fond of my last name (Dyck). Then I considered using my soon-to-be married name (Alyssa Harris), but decided that since I will be using this mark to apply for jobs before I am actually married in June that that would be premature. I ended up overcoming the issue by deciding to create a brand name for myself rather than going off of my actual name. Another problem I ran into was making the icon a reflection of me, while not straying too far from the real purpose which is to show that I am a visual designer. For example, even though I love snowboarding, I wanted to keep the focus of this brand mark on my design abilities. I overcame this problem by making the logo more textual and less intricately designed than I had originally planned, and that kept me from straying from the purpose of the mark.
After developing my first sketched idea in Illustration, I shared it with my peers to receive further feedback. With lots of feedback and critique, my brand mark adapted to a more refined version. See the comparison in the image below.
This brand mark represents me because the “A” stands for “Alyssa.” Secondly, it represents me because it incorporates the selection tool symbol used in the Adobe programs, which is my program of choice when it comes to design. It represents my design skills further with 3D “designy” look as if the logo is me designing the logo. Lastly, it represents me because I used one of my favorite colors in the colorized version. The last step of my brand mark process was to see how it would look on various business materials. I did this with the use of mock up materials. Here is how my applied brand mark would appear:
a. Post any images that you submitted in the contest: This is the image that I submitted into the Sports photography contest.
b. Include a paragraph or two about how you created your entry: First I had to create an account on the page, GuruShots, and so I did that and then chose my contest to submit which was Sports Photography. After doing that I had to resize my image to the appropriate size, which was a height of 700 pixels, and then just hit submit.
c. Add a paragraph about the contest you chose and why you chose it: This contest is for any and all sports photography, there wasn’t really any rules other than to only include photography featuring sports. One reason I chose to enter was because it was free to enter, and I am a poor college student. Another reason I chose to enter is because most photography I do is sports related, and most often is snowboarding. And that is the photography that I most enjoy and am most passionate about, so this contest definitely seemed like a good fit for me.

I have learned so much from the Communications 300 course. I have learned how to manually set my own camera, how to pose and compose subjects, and how to share my photography with others through print and web. The following photo book demonstrates how I have taken all of these new abilities and put them to use.
I created this photo book through the use of Adobe Indesign, and created some of the visual design elements (such as my logo) with the use of Adobe Illustrator. I used a light blue and gray color scheme throughout my book, and used the font helvetica in a variety of boldness to use contrast with body and header text elements. I then sent my photo book to MyPublisher to have it printed.

These photos were captured of a well known granary at the entrance of Ririe, Idaho. The words that I drew out of a hat for my conceptual challenge were: granary, weary, and relax. And the two words that I chose to add to that selection were: transform, and outdoors. I originally had a hard time brainstorming ideas to include weary and relax in the same photo because they are so contradictory, but then I realized I could use that to my advantage. I decided to show the evolution of feeling weary, to feeling relaxed about a difficult situation. In this case, the situation being depicted was a tragic accident where an overly hot summer caused heat damage to all of this man’s grain causing a large financial loss. The first emotion the man felt was grief. Then it shows how step by step he was able to make peace with the situation and feel relaxed. I captured the majority of these photos by using a Focal Length of 18mm, F Stop of 8, and Shutter Speed of 1/650. But you will notice that there is one photo that is darker than the rest so I could get the gloomy sky look, and I captured that by turning the F stop to 11 and the Shutter Speed to 1/900. I also used a tripod to assure that all the photos would be taken from the same position so that I could blend them all together in Photoshop without difficulty. After capturing all of the photos, I took them into Photoshop and cut out the man in each of the photos showing his evolution. I then positioned him in a line showing the evolution and set the layers of the middle steps at 50% opacity. I then used a levels adjustment to correct the coloring a little. And above you can see the final product!
